The Water is Wide

The Water is Wide

Novel by Pat Conroy

While The Water is Wide references Yamacraw Island, Pat Conroy actually refers to Daufuskie Island in the heartfelt novel, where he recounts his experiences teaching island children in the 1960s at the Mary Field School.

His unconventional teaching methods made the water a little less wide for the children living a world apart from other kids their age on the mainland. It’s a beautiful story of compassion that won Conroy a humanitarian award from the National Education Association.

If you’ve read the book and have never been to Daufuskie, give us a call, and we’ll take you there.

If you’ve been on Daufuskie and have never read the book – we suggest you take the ride back in time and immerse yourself in this memoir. It was a year that changed not only Conroy’s life but also that of a group of island children.
