Visiting Daufuskie
Your Day. Your Island. Your Adventure.
Why Daufuskie Rocks
No cars. No traffic lights. No strip malls. Daufuskie Island is straight-up different — in the best way possible.
It’s part history, part party, and part “why didn’t we come here sooner?”
But what is there to do on Daufuskie Island? Whether you’re looking to kick back, explore, or just get off the grid for the day, Daufuskie is the spot. We’ll get you there by boat, then the island’s yours to discover, or we can show you around.
A World Away (but just a boat ride from Savannah)
- Feels like you’ve time-traveled (in a good way).
- Zero stress, all vibes.
- It’s close enough for a day trip or an overnight stay–but feels like another world, either way.
Whether you are taking a day trip to Daufuskie or enjoying an extended stay, our guide below will give you a sense of what Daufuskie has to offer.
What to do?
Daufuskie Island Guide

On Deck Diner
You can’t go wrong between the Daufuskie Island Distillery and its On Deck Diner. All applaud their libations, and we often get asked to “grab another bottle” for someone while we’re on the island. The diner offers a standard menu with rotating specials – all of which are absolutely drool-worthy and served in generous proportions (again, boasting the best fries on the island). Outdoor seating (covered). (Menu→)
Driftwood Diner
Daufuskie has brunch! The Driftwood Diner is a great place to stop for morning visits to start your day on Daufuskie. Outdoor seating.
The Sportsman at Melrose
Nestled in the heart of Daufuskie Island, The Sportsman at Melrose is a family-friendly pub with its historic atmosphere and diverse selection of food options! A children’s menu is available, and smoothies are offered on Thursdays. Indoor seating. (Menu→)
D’Fuskie’s
D’Fuskie’s Store & Eatery offers freshly-made pizza, sandwiches, paninis, and a bar. Menu items rotate on a whiteboard. Located near the public dock, it also has a general store, a nearby playground, and a bar. Indoor and outdoor seating.
Up in Smoke BBQ
Offering lunch and dinner menus, Up in Smoke BBQ serves up a selection of BBQ lunch options and an evening of fine dining with plated meals. Weekly specials vary, and a children’s menu is available. Indoor seating. (Menu→)
Old Daufuskie Crab Company
Probably the most well-known stop on Daufuskie Island, the Old Daufuskie Crab Company at Freeport Marina is known for its Scrap Iron drink. Live music, friendly faces, and a tidal breeze are included with every meal. Nearby, you’ll find a playground, a general store, and more. Indoor and outdoor seating. (Menu→)
Frye’s Corner
Bringing a little Georgia over to South Carolina, Frye’s Corner offers fresh chicken strips and wings, Vidalia Onion rings, fresh-cut fries, and homemade coleslaw. Outdoor seating; open seasonally.
School Grounds Coffee
Located in the old Mary Fields School, School Grounds Coffee is a cozy cafe offering coffee, tea, and baked goods in a casual setting. Outdoor seating.
Sally Ann Robinson, Chef
Want to eat in instead of out? Sally Ann Robinson, a native of Daufuskie, is a private chef who has authored numerous Gullah recipe books. (Sally Ann Robinson’s Sample Menu→)

Only found at the Old Daufuskie Crab Company, the Scrap Iron drink has a history of its own. After the decline of jobs due to the lack of oysters, locals would make corn liquor, place the barrels in a canoe, cover them with scrap iron, and row to River Street to sell it. When asked by the revenue officers what they were hauling, they would tell them Scrap Iron to sell in order to feed their families. The drink finally became known as the Scrap Iron, and the recipe remains a secret. Fair warning: it’s strong.
Then, head over to the Silver Dew Winery to taste the island’s famous Scuppernong Wine at South Carolina’s oldest winery! Its building was originally constructed in 1883 as a wick house.
Lastly, don’t forget to stop by the Daufuskie Island Distillery and try their Daufuskie Island Rum, Blueberry Lavender vodka, and other local spirits, all distilled locally on the island. Stay for a while and enjoy a bite to eat while you sit on their spacious patio overlooking a pond that’s home to local wildlife. The On Deck Diner also offers lunch (best fries on the island).
*Please drink responsibly*

Although Daufuskie is known for its quiet charm and untouched natural beauty, it’s also home to a handful of unique, locally-owned shops and galleries that reflect the island’s soul—artful, coastal, and undeniably local. Whether you’re searching for handmade crafts, island-inspired art, or the perfect souvenir, here are some of our favorite spots to explore:

The First Union African Baptist Church was built in 1884. Its location is near the site of the 1881 church, founded by former slaves and destroyed by fire. It is the oldest remaining building on the island. The church remains active and welcomes all to its Sunday Service.

Pat Conroy immortalized the school in his book, The Water is Wide. When the Daufuskie Island Elementary School was built in 1997, the Mary Fields School was closed. It now houses the School Grounds Coffee and Daufuskie Blues.

Popular Activities, Destinations & Tours
We had a fantastic experience on our half-day boat trip with Captain Matt. He brought us shark tooth hunting and then to Daufuskie Island where we got a great tour of the island on his golf cart and to a beautiful non busy beach. Matt was the perfect match for what we wanted in this experience. I highly recommend Low Country Drifters for anyone looking to experience a boat charter without going out in the main waters of the ocean.

Incredible charter experience! My wife and I took our 2-year-old daughter and her grandparents on a half-day trip and had an absolute blast.
Captain Bryan, the owner, arranged a fantastic trip touring the area and was extremely knowledgeable about the local history and ecology. We saw tons of wildlife, including dolphins and eagles, and visited The Wyld restaurant for lunch before heading back in.

We went on a private boat tour with Low Country Drifters, and it was an unforgettable experience!
Captain Bryan was so knowledgeable and friendly, sharing interesting facts about the history and ecology of the area.
We cruised past beautiful scenery, spotted dolphins playing in the water, found several shark teeth on the beach, and enjoyed a delicious lunch of burgers and patty melts from The Burger Boat.Since he does private tours, it was just the 3 of us, and we weren’t crammed into a boat with lots of people.
It also allowed Capt Bryan to provide a completely personalized tour.
Our experience was everything we wanted and more! It was a perfect way to spend our first day in Savannah!Avie C. – Conroe, TX

Who knew I was going to book a custom private boat experience and feel like I walked away with a new friend? Captain Bryan took charge and planned an amazing day, even picking up supplies I needed since my group was from out of town.
We saw local treasures off the beaten path, met some great locals at a few stops, and sang country music as we headed back in with cloudy skies… it was absolute perfection, and no one was going to rain on our parade that day. My only regret is that we didn’t have enough time with him.
Not only is he exceptionally skilled, he’s an interesting gentleman. If you’re looking for a unique and personalized day trip, you can end your search here. We will all miss you, Captain, and be assured we will be back!

This veteran-owned business provided the most memorable time we had during our vacation in Savannah!
We had an incredible day with Bryan! All of his insights and historical info enhanced the experience.
The day was full of excitement: found all kinds of fossils and shark teeth including pieces of Megaladon, followed a group of feeding dolphins, enjoyed delicious food, the wildlife, and a distillery on Daufuski Island. Bryan never rushed us to the next place; he allowed us to be fully in the moment.
