Why Someone May Want an Extended Visit
1. Peace, Quiet & No Crowds
With no bridges to the mainland and limited vehicle traffic, Daufuskie is wonderfully isolated. An overnight stay gives you a chance to experience the island’s stillness after the day-trippers leave. The nights are quiet, the stars are bright, and the pace slows to something truly restorative.
2. Sunrise & Sunset Magic
Catch both the sunrise and sunset from different points on the island—without rushing back to the mainland. Whether you’re walking the beach or watching from a porch swing, the sky puts on a show you won’t forget.
3. Local Flavor & Island Vibes
Sip something local at the Daufuskie Island Distillery, stop by the community farm, or relax at a quiet beach cottage with your own private view. With no chain stores or big developments, everything feels authentic and personal.
4. Wild Beauty All to Yourself
Enjoy the beaches, trails, and quiet roads at your own pace. Bike rides under moss-draped oaks, beachcombing at golden hour, and early-morning dolphin sightings are all part of the magic when you stay overnight.
5. A True Escape
No bridges. No stoplights. No hurry. Daufuskie is perfect for those looking to unplug and experience something rare—nature, history, and southern island life, without the noise.
Overnight Accommodations
Daufuskie Island offers vacation rentals, including houses, cottages, and villas. We recommend the following property managers:

What to consider when booking a property
- Does it come with a golf cart? If so, is it gas or electric? Golf carts are the mode of transportation on the island; some neighborhoods don’t allow gas carts.
- Does it include any recreational equipment? Think about what would make your stay on Daufuskie most enjoyable (bikes, beach chairs, boogie boards, access to a pool, etc.)
- Is there a well-equipped kitchen and a grill? Depending on the length of your stay, you may not want to eat out for every meal, especially when options are limited.
- Where is it located? Inner-island or beachfront? Confirm with the property manager to ensure the location is exactly where you’d like.
- What will you need while you’re there? Do they offer beach/pool towels, a coffee maker, linens, trash bags, paper towels, an iron, and, if needed, a pack-and-play and high chair?
- Does the rental provide transportation to and from the dock? If not, reserve land transportation with Daufuskie Life. We will communicate with them to ensure a smooth transition on and off the island.
Staying on Daufuskie
When you book Daufuskie Water Taxi Services with Low Country Drifters, we will provide you with a guide that includes restaurants, points of interest, and things to do. In the meantime, below are some topics to consider.
Packing for Daufuskie
This may seem lengthy, but it’s worth the read
There is no need to pack the kitchen sink, especially when you have to bring belongings over by boat (like an elevator, boats have weight limits).
However, staying longer on Daufuskie means embracing the island’s relaxed, unplugged pace—so a little extra thoughtful prep goes a long way to ensure a comfortable visit.
Our boats do not have enclosed cabins, so luggage will be exposed to the elements. We carry heavy-duty plastic on board if needed. However, some of our regular Daufuskie guests prefer to pack in sturdy, lidded bins for easy stacking and protection.
Necessities/Groceries
Pack what you can for food. Remember that the island boasts some phenomenal dining options, and while Daufuskie may not have everything you want, it has everything you need.
Plan your meals by choosing where to eat; once a water taxi is booked, we provide our guests with a list of options and their operating hours (though these may vary).
There are several places where you can find items such as milk, ketchup, beer, wine, diapers, and water. If you have specific preferences or specialty items, we recommend bringing them with you.
D’Fuskie’s and Freeport General Store are both small general stores offering sundries, trinkets, and ice cream. Additionally, Low Country Grocery Runner is a delivery service.
PRO TIPS:
- Prepped food usually takes up less room than seperate ingredients.
- Freeze what you can, and it can double as ice in your cooler for the trip over.
- The water on the island is safe to drink, and most rentals have Brita water pitchers. Consider packing refillable water bottles and flavor packets.
Attire
Daufuskie Island is casual. Shorts, sundresses, swimsuits, and light clothing keep you cool in the summer, while layering in the cooler months prepares you for any weather. Winters can bring a chill (and so can a sunburn), so a sweatshirt never hurts.
*Most rental homes on Daufuskie have washers and dryers, so if you’re staying for an extended period, consider doing a load of laundry rather than overpacking.
Miscellaneous Packing List
Consider packing the following:
- Medication
*There’s nowhere to buy prescription medications on the island, so be sure to bring enough - bug/gnat spray
- sunscreen
- beach towels
Quick-dry beach towels are space-savers - a rain jacket
- binoculars or a camera
- flashlight
*Red lenses are required from May 1st through October 31st for the sea turtle nesting season - beach wagon
- a deck of cards
- travel first-aid kit
- ID/cash
