Planning a Low Country adventure?

We’ve compiled a comprehensive list of FAQs addressing some of the most common questions and misconceptions about our tours, what to expect on the water, and how to prepare for your day with us.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned boater, this page is here to help you feel confident and ready for your coastal adventure.

If you don’t see your question here, don’t hesitate to contact us—we’re always happy to help!

About the Experience

First of all, this isn’t your stuffy, run-of-the-mill tour.

Call it what you want—an adventure, beach day, outing, excursion, or just a break from the ordinary—our boat tours are whatever you want them to be. At Low Country Drifters, we offer private, customizable experiences that drift away from the script. Whether you’re hunting for shark teeth, exploring Daufuskie Island, spotting dolphins, or relaxing on a remote beach, you’re not just along for the ride—you’re writing the day as you go.

Explore some of our guests’ favorite activities here, and if you’d like, please don’t hesitate to contact us to continue the conversation.

It depends on what you want to do!

  • Our most popular boat tour is our half-day (4 hours).
  • Long summer days allow for an extended time on the water, however! Our full-day is 6 hours.
  • The water taxi to Daufuskie takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the elements.
  • Our sunset cruises last 2 hours.

If you’re on a half-day and want to spend some more time, the day is yours! Just talk to your captain to see if it’s possible; while on the boat, he accepts both cash, credit cards, and Venmo to extend the tour.

Absolutely. Safety is always our top priority. Both of our captains—Bryan and Matt—are U.S. Army veterans with strong backgrounds in safety, leadership, and situational awareness. A licensed captain leads each trip, and every boat is equipped with Coast Guard-approved safety gear, life jackets, and a marine radio for constant communication.

We also carry a First Aid kit on every trip, and our captains are trained in CPR and emergency response.

Additionally, we stick to calm, protected waters, such as marshes, tidal creeks, and the Intracoastal Waterway—not the open ocean—making our trips ideal for guests of all ages, including first-time boaters and families.

It’s unlikely that you’ll experience motion sickness while on a tour with us. The Intracoastal Waterway is far different than the ocean as it is primarily a sheltered, inland route, offering a much calmer ride with significantly less motion than the open ocean. However, if you are concerned about it, over-the-counter options are available, such as Dramamine, Bonine, or simple pressure bands.

Short answer:  Our captains are licensed!

Long answer: Captain Bryan Neal has a 6-pack Captain’s license and is a retired Army Veteran. He has over 20 years of experience in and around the waters of Savannah, Georgia, and is also CPR/First Aid certified. Captain Matt Merriam is also a Veteran, has his 25-ton Master Captain’s license and is CPR/First Aid certified.

To have a Captain’s license,  you must pass/have the following:

  • United States Coast Guard-approved course and exam
  • physical exam and drug test
  • First Aid/CPR course
  • a certain amount of sea time experience
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) card (background check required)

We’re flexible. Most trips launch from Thunderboltjust between Savannah and Tybee Island—but we also offer pickups from downtown Savannah* and Daufuskie Island with advance notice. Once you book, we’ll work with you to confirm the most convenient spot and send over everything you need to find us.

*A fuel surcharge may be applied if guests prefer to be picked up downtown.

Our tours are available for up to six people, excluding the captain and any possible mate. If you’d like to bring more than six, please contact us and we will discuss options.

  • Why six people? We can only host six guests per our license (per boat). A Six-Pack license, officially known as an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) license, allows the holder to operate uninspected vessels carrying up to six paying passengers. The United States Coast Guard issues this license.
  • Can we accommodate more than six? Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: With two licensed boat captains and two boats (and two golf carts on Daufuskie), we can accommodate more than six guests, but the group will have to be spread across two boats. It can be done – and we have done it before.

We are located in Historic Thunderbolt, Georgia, just minutes outside of Savannah, at the Safe Harbor Bahia Bleu Marina. The address and parking directions will be provided once your charter is booked.

Very likely! Dolphins are commonly spotted in our local waterways, and we often see a variety of coastal wildlife like birds, stingrays, crabs, and the occasional manatee or sea turtle. While we can’t guarantee sightings (nature does its own thing), our captains know the area well and will take you through spots where wildlife tends to show up. Keep your eyes open—you never know what might pop up alongside the boat.

We don’t offer “Dolphin Tours” because… they are part of every trip!

Absolutely—100% yes! We’re a family with kids ourselves, and we love welcoming young explorers on board. It’s a joy to share the water, wildlife, and coastal history with them. Just a heads up: all guests 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian age 18 or older.

Absolutely! We offer year-round tours, including in the winter months. In fact, winter can be a great time to explore the waterways—there’s less boat traffic, the wildlife is still active, and the cooler temperatures make for a comfortable day on the water. Just dress in layers, and we’ll take care of the rest.

If you have questions about what to expect during a winter tour, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help you plan the perfect outing.

Yes, and we encourage it! Every trip with Low Country Drifters is private and tailored to your interests. Whether you’re into shark tooth hunting, island hopping, beachcombing, wildlife watching, or learning about coastal history—we’ll build the day around what you’re excited about. Just let us know what kind of experience you’re after when booking.

All charters, tours, cruises, excursions, and adventures accommodate up to six guests and include a U.S. Coast Guard-certified captain, fuel, safety gear, a cooler with ice and water, and plenty of local knowledge. You’re welcome to bring your own drinks, snacks, and gear for the day.

More specific information regarding our water taxi services may be found here.

Yes! We offer private water taxi service to and from Daufuskie Island (from Savannah) for overnight guests staying at vacation rentals. We have a taxi schedule that coincides with check-in and check-out, but we’ll need to talk through timing, luggage, and golf cart rentals as part of the booking conversation.

Just let us know if you need a time that is different than what we have listed, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you!

Day-of Details

Please note that space is limited, and what to bring is always dependent on the type of tour you’ll be taking and the time of year.

A cooler with complimentary ice and cold water is available on every trip; feel free to BYOB and pack some snacks! We also have limited dry storage for you to stow any personal items. Be sure to bring your wallet and some sunscreen!

Your captain will review other items you may want to bring once you book your tour. In the meantime, check out our list of ideas here.

Dry storage is limited, so please pack only the necessities.

Since we book tours year-round, consider the season first. Savannah weather can be unpredictable, so layering is a good idea. Comfortable, quick-drying, casual attire is generally recommended. We kindly request that you arrive prepared, with sunscreen already applied.

Warmer weather

You’re on a boat! If you plan to swim or splash, consider bringing a swimsuit or other quick-drying clothing. Flip-flops, water shoes, Crocs, or similar footwear for your feet. Something to protect you from the sun, like a UPF shirt, is a great idea, too. Sunscreen is key. A hat (baseball hats usually work better when the boat speeds up, but brimmed hats are great for the beach).

But remember – the middle of summer is hot.

Cooler weather

A lightweight shirt, sweater, and jacket can help you adjust to changing conditions. A rain jacket can also serve as a windbreaker. While we’re in the South–be mindful that the winters can get cold and if it’s cold, it’s a “wet cold” so you’ll want to dress accordingly.

Shark Tooth Hunting PSA

The beach can be slick or muddy. Going barefoot is ideal as the clay accumulates on your shoes. In turn, you lose traction, and cleaning the clay off is a chore. Wear quick-drying clothing, as you will need to step into the water to access the beach (there are no docks). But if you must, consider water shoes or Crocs as you walk in the water.

Yes. Alcoholic beverages are welcome for those ages 21 and over, but please avoid bringing glass for safety reasons. Cans and/or boxed wine can be compacted in the trash can and take up less room on board.

Absolutely. Gratuity is not included in the charter price. If you’ve enjoyed your experience, tips for our hardworking crew are greatly appreciated for the service they provided. Gratuity aboard a charter boat works similarly to other service-providing industry gratuities and ranges from 15-25% of the cost of the boat tour.

Life jackets are available for everyone on board in case of an emergency.

Children under the age of 13 must wear an appropriately sized PFD when the vessel is underway. Low Country Drifters has various children’s life jackets available, but if you have your own, you’re welcome to bring them along.

You will be prompted to enter your child(ren)’s weight while booking your trip to ensure we have the appropriate PFD(s) ready for your group.

No, there is not a bathroom on board, but we can make stops to accommodate!

Yes! We are dog friendly and welcome your four-legged friend(s) on board! However, depending on where you’d like to go, your pup may or may not be allowed. Please bring your own doggie life jacket (though not required).

Due to migratory birds and nesting shorebirds and sea turtles, dogs are NOT allowed at the following destinations:

  • Wassaw Island/Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge
  • Ossabaw Island
  • Portions of Little Tybee

Other areas may require dogs to be on a leash, so bringing one is mandatory if your pup joins your tour.

As with all migratory bird species, shorebirds and seabirds in Georgia are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Some species have additional protections under the Endangered Species Act.

Destination-Specific Questions

Shark Tooth Island Excursions

Our excursions take you to Bird Island, also known as “Shark Tooth Island,” along with nearby spoil islands in the Savannah River. These hidden islands are only accessible by boat, making them the perfect spot for uncovering shark teeth, fossils, and other unique artifacts.

The boat ride itself is part of the adventure—along the way, you’ll have the chance to spot coastal wildlife (such as dolphins, egrets, or osprey, depending on the season) while your captain shares fascinating stories about Savannah’s waterways and coastal history.

With Low Country Drifters, you’ll be on the islands in just 15–20 minutes from our marina, giving you more time to hunt for treasures and enjoy the adventure.

Yes—when you go with an experienced guide. As highly advised by the U.S. Coast Guard, Low Country Drifters provides safe, reliable, and fully guided tours for shark tooth, fossil, and artifact hunting. Due to the Savannah River’s active shipping channel, which features large container ship traffic and extreme summer heat, drop-offs without a guide are strongly discouraged.

With Low Country Drifters, your safety is our top priority. Our captains remain on shore with you throughout the excursion, showing you how to spot shark teeth and fossils while helping identify the artifacts you uncover. We also keep a plentiful supply of cold water on board to keep you comfortable during your hunt.

Choosing a private, guided shark tooth hunting tour with Low Country Drifters means peace of mind, expert guidance, and the best chance of finding real treasures along the river.

Our Shark Tooth Excursions take you to spoil islands created from dredging the Savannah River, a process that’s been ongoing since the 1800s. Because this material is pulled up from the riverbed, it’s rich with fossils, shark teeth, and historical artifacts that have been buried for centuries—or even millions of years.

Guests often find fossilized shark teeth from bull sharks, lemon sharks, and sand tiger sharks, along with stingray plates, oyster fossils, and occasionally fragments from the legendary, massive, and prehistoric megalodon. In addition to fossils, it’s not uncommon to spot relics and artifacts such as clay pipes or pottery shards that reflect Savannah’s long history as a port city.

While not every trip uncovers a megalodon tooth, every excursion guarantees something unique—whether it’s a fossil, shark tooth, or artifact—and the excitement of uncovering pieces of history with your own hands. Our captains are right there to help identify your discoveries, turning each hunt into a memorable adventure.

Absolutely—everything you find is yours to keep. From shark teeth and stingray plates to oyster fossils and even historic relics, you’ll take home your discoveries as unique souvenirs of your Shark Tooth Excursion in Savannah.

Shark tooth hunting is a year-round adventure. Because our excursions take place on spoil islands created from dredged river material, there are always fresh opportunities to find shark teeth, fossils, and artifacts, no matter the season. Low Country Drifters offers trips throughout the year, so you can hunt whenever your schedule allows.

Yes—our tours are private and customizable. Many guests combine shark tooth hunting with a beach stop, lunch on Daufuskie Island, or a scenic sunset cruise drifting by landmarks like the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. Your captain will help plan a personalized itinerary for your 4- or 6-hour excursion.

Yes—our excursions are designed for families, groups, and adventurers of all ages. Kids love the excitement of fossil hunting. Not only that, our captains love to have kids on board and make the experience safe, engaging, and educational.

We provide bags for your finds, and your captain will show you the best techniques for spotting and identifying fossils. Guests are welcome to bring small hand tools if they wish, but most teeth and fossils can be collected directly from the surface.

Half-day trips run about 4 hours and full-day trips run 6 hours. Since all of our reservations are private and personalized, you set the pace and can decide how much time you want to spend fossil hunting versus exploring other spots.

Daufuskie Island

Daufuskie Island is the southernmost inhabited island in South Carolina. It is tucked between Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Tybee Island, Georgia.

The only way to reach Daufuskie Island is by boat, as it is an island with no bridge.

Low Country Drifters provides boat transportation, golf cart access for exploring, and guided tours of the island. Depending on your excursion, you may also enjoy time for lunch, history stops, or even shark tooth hunting along the way. The trip can range from a 4-hour (half-day) to a 6-hour (full-day) tour.

Yes! Vacation rentals and cottages are available. If you’re staying overnight, you can book our water taxi service to get there and back (departing from Savannah).

If you’ve booked one of our guided island tours, our captain stays with you the entire time to show you Daufuskie’s hidden corners.

If you’ve booked our water taxi service, overnight visitors are dropped off with their luggage and picked up at the arranged time.

Learn more about our Daufuskie Island offerings.

Comfortable clothes, sunscreen, water shoes or sandals, and cash or card for local shops and restaurants. Don’t forget your camera—between the history, wildlife, and beaches, there’s plenty to capture.

If staying awhile, visit our helpful page on what to pack.

Yes. The island features a few local restaurants and cafes that capture the laid-back spirit of the Low Country. Hours vary, so we’ll recommend options based on your trip.

View options here.

Absolutely—Daufuskie is known for its artisans. You’ll find local, island-inspired art that makes for one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

View options here.

Definitely. Kids love riding in golf carts, exploring beaches, and learning about the island’s history. We recommend discussing the pace of your trip with us so we can tailor it to your group.

The island is about 5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide—small enough to explore by golf cart but full of rich history, art studios, historic churches, and quiet beaches.

Most likely! The boat ride and the island offer opportunities to spot dolphins, seabirds, alligators, deer, and other coastal wildlife, depending on the season.

Special Requests

We don’t specifically offer ‘Dolphin Tours’ but spotting and watching dolphins is part of every trip – along with seeing all sorts of other wildlife!

Yes—we’ve definitely done all of the above, and we love being part of moments that matter. Whether it’s a surprise proposal, a laid-back birthday beach day, or a special family celebration, we’ll help craft a private experience that fits the vibe you’re going for. Let us know what you’re celebrating, and we’ll make it unforgettable.

*Depending, additional costs may apply. Contact us to share your idea!

We get this question a lot. Unfortunately, no. Low Country Drifters does not offer boat rentals.

That being said, we highly recommend NOT renting a boat in the area if you are not familiar with Savannah’s waters as the coastal landscape is constantly being reshaped. Shifting channels and sandbars are a natural result of powerful tides, storms, and river currents. These dynamic changes can alter navigation routes and require local knowledge to safely traverse the waterways.

Just like Dolphin Tours, we do not have a specific Birding Tour. However, we can plan a tour to make stops in the locations where shorebirds, migratory birds, waders, eagles, osprey, and more thrive. Keep in mind that the migratory birds are in the area nesting and showing off their plumes between mid-March and August-ish.

Bring your binoculars!

No, we don’t use fan boats (also known as airboats). While they’re commonly used in places like the Florida Everglades, where the water is extremely shallow and still, they’re not well-suited for the Savannah area.

Here in the Low Country, we have tidal rivers, salt marshes, and deeper coastal waterways that are better navigated with traditional boats. Fan boats are also loud and can be disruptive to the wildlife we love to showcase on our eco tours. Our boats are chosen for their comfort, versatility, and ability to get into hidden spots quietly—perfect for exploring everything from winding creeks to barrier islands.

Can we accommodate more than six? Short answer: yes. Long answer: With two licensed boat captains and two boats (and two golf carts on Daufuskie), we can accommodate more than six guests, but the group will have to be spread across two boats. It can be done – and we have done it before.

Indeed! Our captains are here to help you become accustomed to the Low Country waterways. Even with prior boating experience, the Georgia Coast is much different than other areas, especially with our tides. The Savannah River Entrance experiences a significant tide swing, with a maximum tidal range of 11 feet… meaning… the water level can fluctuate by nearly 11 feet between high and low tides.

But that’s the type of thing our captains will explain to you, as well as drop lines on your GPS, show you the ins and outs, and even help you become more familiar with docking, navigation, etc.

Learn more here.

You sure can! One of the best parts of a private charter with Low Country Drifters is the freedom to mix and match. Whether you want to hunt for shark teeth and explore Daufuskie, or visit a remote beach after spotting dolphins, we’ll help you design a day that fits your interests.

Just keep in mind that some destinations are farther apart, and tides and timing can affect what’s possible in a single trip. We’ll work with you ahead of time to set realistic expectations and make the most of your day on the water.

Policies

Your comfort and safety are our #1 priority. Because we’re located in the south on the coast, a rain shower is possible, especially in the summer!  That being said, showers pop up and can go away quickly so they hardly ever ruin a charter.  However, if bad weather is imminent, we can reschedule or cancel altogether.

Absolutely—tips are always appreciated for our service, but never expected. Gratuity is not included in the charter price, and if you feel your captain went above and beyond to make your experience special, a tip is a great way to say thanks.

Just like in other service industries, tips typically range from 15–25% of the trip cost, depending on your experience.

Tips can be given in cash, added to the credit card you booked with, or, if it’s easier, most of our guests also use apps like Venmo–just ask your captain for their preferred method.

We get it—things come up! If you’re running late, please let your captain know as soon as possible so they’re not left waiting at the dock. Your charter time starts at the agreed-upon departure time, not when you arrive, so any delays may shorten your outing.

We’ll always do our best to work with you when possible, but out of respect for the captain’s schedule and time they could have spent with their family, timely arrival is important. A quick heads-up goes a long way!

We offer free cancellation or rebooking up to 24 hours before your scheduled departure. This gives us a chance to offer the spot to another guest. If you need to cancel, just let us know as soon as possible—we’re happy to work with you.

No-shows and cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are typically non-refundable, as that time has been reserved just for you.

Generally speaking, our captains won’t cancel or reschedule a reservation unless there is imminent danger, an emergency, or something out of their control. Guests will receive a full refund if LCD cancels the trip. That said, we know unexpected things can happen, and we’ll always do our best to find a solution.

We had a fantastic experience on our half-day boat trip with Captain Matt. He brought us shark tooth hunting and then to Daufuskie Island where we got a great tour of the island on his golf cart and to a beautiful non busy beach. Matt was the perfect match for what we wanted in this experience. I highly recommend Low Country Drifters for anyone looking to experience a boat charter without going out in the main waters of the ocean.

Who knew I was going to book a custom private boat experience and feel like I walked away with a new friend? Captain Bryan took charge and planned an amazing day, even picking up supplies I needed since my group was from out of town.

We saw local treasures off the beaten path, met some great locals at a few stops, and sang country music as we headed back in with cloudy skies… it was absolute perfection, and no one was going to rain on our parade that day. My only regret is that we didn’t have enough time with him.

Not only is he exceptionally skilled, he’s an interesting gentleman. If you’re looking for a unique and personalized day trip, you can end your search here. We will all miss you, Captain, and be assured we will be back!

This veteran-owned business provided the most memorable time we had during our vacation in Savannah!

We had an incredible day with Bryan! All of his insights and historical info enhanced the experience.

The day was full of excitement: found all kinds of fossils and shark teeth including pieces of Megaladon, followed a group of feeding dolphins, enjoyed delicious food, the wildlife, and a distillery on Daufuski Island. Bryan never rushed us to the next place; he allowed us to be fully in the moment.

With his reasonable prices, we definitely got more than we paid for!

Captain Bryan was so knowledgeable and friendly, sharing interesting facts about the history and ecology of the area.
We cruised past beautiful scenery, spotted dolphins playing in the water, found several shark teeth on the beach, and enjoyed a delicious lunch of burgers and patty melts from The Burger Boat.

Since he does private tours, it was just the 3 of us, and we weren’t crammed into a boat with lots of people.
It also allowed Capt Bryan to provide a completely personalized tour.
Our experience was everything we wanted and more! It was a perfect way to spend our first day in Savannah!

My wife and I spent the day on the water with Low Country Drifters on Monday.

It was both exciting and relaxing at the time. Stopped at Tubby’s for lunch. Highly recommend.

10 out of 10 experience. I will be recommending him to all my friends and family!

We had an amazing time with Captain Bryan.
He was so welcoming and beyond knowledgeable about almost everything.

He told us fascinating stories of Savannah history, information on the river and the sharks teeth, and about his own life.

The trip was so fun, the boat is very nice and fit all of our team comfortably. Whenever we needed anything, Captain Bryan was there to assist. Best trip!

Low Country Drifters Yelp Review

Captain Bryan of Low Country Drifters is an exceptionally knowledgeable boat captain, fossil hunter, and tour guide.

He took my wife and daughter out today to look for shark teeth, dinosaur bones, pottery shards, and other relics of ages past, and we were fully satisfied.

He gave us an ecological and historical tour of the Savannah ICW, brought us to Daufuskie Island in South Carolina for an excellent lunchtime meal, and made sure our photo opportunities were numerous and perfect.

10/10 would recommend to anyone wanting to tour the Savannah area!

We booked a tour with Bryan, and it did not disappoint!

Bachelorette party of 5, plenty of room for us all and our things for the day. Bryan was an amazing guide, remained flexible to our adventures!

We got history, shark teeth, views of alligators/wildlife and overall amazing time. You will not regret booking this tour!

Amazing experience for the entire family. Captain Bryan is the epitome of a true professional.

He made us all feel so comfortable; it was like being out on the water with a trusted family member. He is so knowledgeable and has so many interesting facts about the area. We had some really good finds on our shark tooth tour, but we enjoyed the rest of the experience just as much.

Already looking at the calendar so we can book another trip. Thank you, sir for the trip, and also your devoted service to our country.

Couldn’t wait for a second trip- now looking forward to a third one!

This was our second trip with Low Country Drifters, and we have a third one planned!

This time, we went to Shark Tooth Island, where we found not only shark teeth but dolphin teeth and dinosaur bones!
There is nothing Captain Bryan doesn’t know about this island or its history!
He also is a wealth of information on the waterways and Daufuskie Island, where we also had a great tour…and a visit to the rookery where the birds were abundant!

Highly, highly recommended for adults, families, you name it. You won’t be disappointed!
